WoW works, I say go with a pro and just update the basic Ram they give you :)

Go to a Best Buy or Apple Store and try them out. You can't possible judge based on someone else's experiences.

What you're describing is a fairly light load. Any modern computer, Windows or Mac based, should be able to handle it without any problems. Just make sure you get a dual core processor at least (quad core is much better) and 4GB of RAM and you'll be fine. I support a group of photographers who use 4 year old Windows PCs with older Xeon processors, and they complain that Photoshop slows down when they have 200+ 20MB images open at once, but that's about it. Any modern computer that's not a netbook will do what you're talking about.
