Question: SHEET MUSIC (Violin) - How to Know When to Switch Finger Position?
( Back )
Answer #1:
This is impossible to answer without seeing the music. Changing positions comes with experience .. you need to get your hand into the easiest position to play the maximum number of notes with the minimum amounts of changes...Of course .. you are the performer. It is up to you how you play the music. You will find that the more complex pieces can only be played in certain positions, whilst the easier ones you will have more choice. Make it easy for yourself. The better it is for you, the better performance you will give.
Answer #2:
You do what works for you. Part of advancing in technique is being able to figure out your own fingerings. You shouldn't have to rely on the printed page to tell you.Has your teacher worked on that with you? Once my students have learned the basics of different positions, I start telling them the options for a passage, then tell them to figure out which one works best. After doing that for a while, I expect them to figure out their own fingerings.
